My humanitarian commitment has become an important part of my life. The assignments in Africa give me fulfilment, satisfaction, and additional motivation. The story began with my joint training with Kofi Boahene at the Mayo Clinic in 1999. In countless hours of working together in the operating room, the desire and intention grew to one day give something back and build a hospital in Ghana to help patients in need.
Over the following years, we initially worked on individual projects, for example in South America, India, and Africa. Subsequently, we structured our efforts and over the course of a decade developed a sustainable engagement in Kigali (Rwanda) under the sponsorship of „Face the Future Foundation (Founder Dr. Peter Adamson)“. We trained local specialists and colleagues, and accompanied the development of modern hospital wards, an intensive care unit, and the first radiation therapy in Rwanda.
The core objective of building and operating a hospital in Ghana was continuously pursued. Kofi Boahene founded the Foundation for Special Surgery in the USA, and I founded the corresponding organization FFSSE.eu in Europe. In 2017, we acquired the land in the capital Accra. The construction company Federlein (Germany) designed the architectural plans and supported the process pro bono. In 2021, the groundbreaking took place after all, and in 2024 we were able to celebrate the opening oft he hospital. Engagements of many generous supporters, including the Rotary Club Regensburg and Rotary International made it possible to equip the first operating theatre and to start treating patients.
Important tasks still lie ahead, such as the installation of a photovoltaic system, a central oxygen supply, and the setup of additional operating rooms and the intensive care unit. For this we ask for your support. You are welcome to direct your donation to IBAN 84 7505 0000 0027 2098 99. Further information and current projects can be found at www.FFSSE.eu — your help reaches those in need, and that is what we stand for personally.
With many thanks,
Holger Gassner and Kofi Boahene
